~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are a lot of people getting hacked in runescape and it is simply because runescape doesn't have a login id, like most games. That wasn't the smartest idea but we're going to have to adapt.
This tutorial will explain:
I. Choosing your password and Security questions.
II. Trustful 3rd Party Programs
III. What do I do if I get hacked?
IV. Getting rid of keyloggers and trojans
V. Getting your account back.
VI. Safely surfing the internet.
I. Choosing your password and Security questions.
When making your password, make sure it has four aspects.
1. Letters
2. Numbers
3. above 10 characters
4. Is completely random.
Example: k2aj24n4111411
To bruteforce a 10 character password, the possibilities would be 34^10
1/340,000,000,000 chance of guessing your password.
This will eliminate any password cracker threat.
Also, do not save any passwords or security questions on your computer, if you have a search and exploit trojan on your computer, it will automatically take your information.
When you choose your security questions, the best thing to do, is make them like your password. Random letters and numbers. I have a explanation for this...if you ever try to get your account back and you do match them exactly, they will give your account back instantly.
II. Trustful 3rd Party Programs
Whenever you are downloading a macro'er, always scan it before you open it. When you download something, make sure it is in a .rar or .zip so that if it is malware you won't get infected if you don't open it.
When you scan something you want to look for the following things,
1. Backdoors
2. Any type of Exploit
3. Filereaders
4. keyloggers
www.virustotal.com is a good virus scanner.
If any of those pop up, you should delete the file immediately.
If you opened it, I will explain what to do in section IV.
If you want to find a good auto-fighter, your best bet would to find someone good with auto-it and ask them what to do.
III. What do I do if I get hacked?
If you ever get hacked, STAY CALM. If you panic, you may do something stupid. If you don't know how you were hacked, go to another computer and then do what section V tells you to do. When you get hacked, start writing down information such as:
the ip you log on at all the time.
people you last talked to.
people on your buddy list.
quests you just completed.
the date you set your security questions.
How many days of membership you had left. (if your a member).
IV. Getting rid of keyloggers and trojans.
First of all, you want to make sure your firewall is on at ALL times, if you turn it off, then your asking for trouble. Whenever a program you don't recognize wishes to access the internet, BLOCK IT.
This can be done with Mcafee, zonealarm and other various AV's.
If you have a program that isn't as obvious like that, such as a backdoor, open up task manager, (cntrl+alt+delete), and go to the process tabs. This tells you all the processes currently running on your computer, google any programs that seem suspicious and if they are, then terminate the process, search it on your computer and delete any traces of it.
If you can't seem to get rid of it, go to your system tools (start->all programs->accessories->system tools. and restore your computer to the date you believe you got this virus, if you don't know, restore about 2-3 weeks.
V. Getting your account back.
If you have been hacked, do not try to get your account back on the same computer you mainly use to play runescape. You may have a keylogger and you just want to be safe.
First thing is first, go to the account recovery section, and type in all the correct recovery questions. If you don't know them, you still have a chance though. In the "extra" part, type in this information, and any other information you think useful.
the ip you log on at all the time.
people you last talked to.
people on your buddy list.
quests you just completed.
the date you set your security questions.
How many days of membership you had left. (if your a member).
Do not cry, complain, etc because that will just get your application denied. I can guarantee you, you will get your account back if you supply all that information.
VI. Safely surfing the internet.
When you surf the internet, never use Internet explorer. If you accidently go to a runescape scam website, they can download things onto your computer through security holes.
Download either of these internet browsers:
FireFox
Opera
Both will ensure your safety when browsing the internet.
